Process and Materials

What makes Cabin Ceramics Unique?

I love making things. The small lump of clay that passes through my hands turns into something unique and beautiful.

My little business is not full time; I simply make because it relaxes me and brings joy.

My ceramics are made in small batches, handmade, ensuring each piece is unique and of the highest quality. I focus on traditional hand-built techniques.

No two pieces are exactly the same, you are receiving something nobody else has in this world.

Where are the ceramics made?

All ceramics are made in my cabin at the bottom of my garden and that is the reason for the name ‘Cabin Ceramics’.

How are the ceramics made and what materials do you use?

I use high quality porcelain and sometimes porcelain stoneware.

Once I have made the item, it needs to dry until greenware, the piece then goes into my electric kiln (known as ‘Kimmy’) for its first firing.

Once bisque fired, I then apply underglazes. I use hand drawn illustration and transfers; I add a clear glaze and then fire for the second time.

When I add lustre, the piece will go in for a third firing. Yep, making ceramics takes time.

Do you take commissions?

It’s just me on my own making things when I can, so I do not take commissions.

How often do you update the shop?

I try to add a batch of ceramics once a month. Ceramics is a slow process. I keep my social media accounts up to date so keep checking for announcements.

Care and Maintenance

How do I care for my ceramic pieces?

The following list of hints and tips will keep your Cabin Ceramic items in good condition, meaning they will last for many years to come.

I recommend light dusting and occasional hand wash with warm soapy water and dry with a soft cloth.

All my work is food safe but not microwave safe.

All Porcelain and Stoneware Porcelain objects are fired in the kiln to 1200 and higher, so they are strong; however they can break if knocked onto hard surfaces. When broken, pieces can have sharp edges, so please take note to be careful when handling.

Any work with metallic lustre (Gold, Platinum, Mother of Pearl) should be kept away from abrasive materials and surfaces to not damage the finish.

Sustainability, Packaging and Shipping

How are the ceramics packaged?

All ceramics are secured in biodegradable bubble wrap and tissue paper and placed in their own box with a little thank you note.

I use cardboard boxes which are either recycled or from FSC-responsible sources. Boxes are padded out with eco-packaging peanuts or recycled padding or bubble wrap I save from orders I receive.

If you receive a parcel with non-eco packaging peanuts, it will be because it’s been sent to me. I receive lots of packing materials when I order clay and materials which I always recycle.

I work hard to minimise my impact on the environment both personally and for my little business.  If you can please reuse any packaging I sent you.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Standard UK orders typically ship between 2 and 5 working days on average, not accounting for unexpected delays with the UK postal system.

Do you offer home delivery?

Yes, if you live within 2 miles of SK4, Heaton Moor and Heaton Chapel.

Do you offer international shipping?

Not at the moment, I may in the future.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping charges are shown during the checkout process.

What payments do you receive?

I accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay among others listed during checkout process.

Can I track my order once’s it’s been shipped?

Yes, once your order has been dispatched, you’ll receive a tracking number via email, so you can monitor progress.

Refunds and Exchanges

I am sure you will be happy with your purchase; please contact me if you have any issues.

I measure and describe my work carefully. Please read the product description carefully taking note of the size, usage and care instructions.

I make all ceramics by hand in small batches, so the dimensions can vary slightly from batch to batch.

Please check you are happy with all the information in the listing before placing an order.

How do I return an item?

To initiate a return please contact me and I will do my best to rectify.  I cannot accept items returned after 14 days of receipt. Unless the item is faulty, return shipping is your responsibility. If the item is returned broken on its journey a refund will not be issued so please re-package very carefully.

What if my item arrives broken?

Ceramics are much sturdier than you think. I carefully package each item. In the unfortunate case that a ceramic piece arrives broken/damaged in transit, please contact me as soon as you receive your piece.
